Dental Bridges

dental bridge exampleBridges are used to fill the space created when a tooth is missing. It is one solution to restore your bite and chewing abilities. Placing a bridge will also prevent other teeth from “tipping over” or drifting out of place into the gap of the missing tooth. When possible a dental implants are the preferred method to replace missing teeth.

A dental bridge is placed on the teeth or implants on either side of the gap created by the missing tooth. In order for a dental bridge to be placed, Dr Gemmell will shape the adjacent teeth or implants so that they can support the bridge.

Like a crown, once the teeth have been prepared to receive a bridge an impression will be taken of the entire area. This impression will be sent to a dental lab that will create your permanent bridge. While the permanent bridge is being created we will place a temporary bridge on the abutment teeth to maintain the positions of the teeth and allow normal function and esthetics.

Composite fillings

Once teeth become damaged by decay it will need to have the disease portion of the tooth restored with a composite filling. The weakened portion of the tooth is removed and a bonded composite filling restores your tooth to its natural shape. With proper brushing and flossing a composite restoration can last for years.

Crowns

A crown is custom-fitted to replace your tooth’s entire natural crown. Extensive decay or teeth weakened by large alloy (amalgam) fillings may need crowns rather than fillings to restore them to proper function. Crowns may be made of gold, porcelain or porcelain fused to a precious metal.

Root canals

When decay reaches the inner material of your tooth (pulp), you may need a root canal. In this procedure, the tooth pulp is removed and replaced with a filling. A tooth that has had a root canal is no longer vital and becomes brittle. We recommend placing a crown as your permanent restoration following a root canal. Dr Gemmell is one of the top root canal dentists in Eugene.

Inlay Restorations

An inlay restoration is utilized when a diseased portion of a tooth is not large enough to require a crown, but the tooth has been weakened to the point that a filling may cause further fracturing. Inlays can be fabricated out of porcelain or gold and are bonded to your natural tooth structure. Same as with a crown, an impression will be taken and sent to a lab and you will wear a temporary until your inlay is fabricated.

Onlay Restorations

When possible an onlay can restore a tooth.Dr. Gemmell uses dental onlays to restore larger areas of damaged teeth. They act as a “mini crown” and extend over one or more of a tooth’s cusps providing strength.

After you get a dental inlay or dental onlay, it’s important to practice good dental hygiene and maintain a regular checkup and cleaning schedule with us. This will prevent further occurrences of tooth decay while also safeguarding the health of the tooth supporting the restoration.
