What types of crowns do we offer at Distinctive Dentistry?
Crowns or caps are often placed over teeth that have fractured, been root canalled, discolored, misshaped or lost a significant amount of tooth structure. Each crown is customized to fit your tooth which your dentist prepared for you. However you have options in regards which one to choose from.
Gold: At one point, gold was the only material used in dentistry since it seals well, polishes to a shine and allows us to remove less tooth structure. Patients often choose to have gold crowns in the back of the mouth where they are less likely to be seen but also where less tooth structure has to be removed to place them.
Porcelain-metal: Porcelain fused to metal crown or PFM is the best of two worlds in that they seal well and look like real teeth. These crowns have metal copings that fits tight to the prepared tooth but the metal is covered in a tooth colored porcelain that is very aesthetic and durable.
Zirconia: These crowns are milled from a block of crystal making these crowns virtually indestructible. They are 5x stronger than porcelain and since they are somewhat translucent, let light in, allowing them to look even more like real teeth.
